About the Villa
School History

statue of mary and cornerstoneFounded in 1918 as an all girls' Catholic boarding school under the direction of the Religious of Jesus and Mary, Villa Augustina stands as an expression of dedication, collaboration, and love lasting more than eight decades. The school was the gift and the dream of Msgr. Augustin Chevalier, pastor of St. Augustin's Church in Manchester, for whom it has been named. For over fifty years after its establishment, the Villa served to enhance the spiritual and intellectual development of young girls from the Manchester area and beyond.

As the school grew, and its reputation for excellence increased, the need to provide more classroom space and a facility for plays and school functions became the focus. In 1962, Rosary Hall was dedicated, the dream, and hard work of a very dedicated group of parents who loved the sisters and loved the school. It continues to be a very integral part of the school to this day.

1968 proved to be a unique year in the Villa's history. Because the need for secondary education was being met in the local area and in the Manchester Diocese, the leadership of the Religious of Jesus and Mary decided to discontinue the high school section and expand on the elementary school. Boys were admitted to the Villa for the first time.

Changes in society in the early 70s meant changes for the Villa as well. The Villa became only a day school, the kindergarten was established, and double classes for each grade kept classes small.

Pre-Kg began in 1985 to help meet the needs of families in the area. Morning and after school care and later Camp Thevenet began for the same reason.

In 1989, the Villa's first School Board was created to oversee the operation and future development of the school. It was a time when the Church was encouraging religious communities to collaborate with the laity for the continuation and development of its works.

Today, the Religious of Jesus and Mary, members of the local community, parents, teachers, and children all work together to make the Villa what it is.

The gift and the dream since its birth, the collaboration between the sisters and the laity, the desire to meet the needs of young families, the dedication of so many individuals, and the love for the children who come, all contribute to make the Villa a "God enlightened place" for the children of the 2lst century.
