Mission Statement:
The mission of the Villa Augustina Booster Club is to operate in accordance with
the mission of the Villa Augustina School – and further, to afford every student
who wishes to participate the opportunity to experience self-confidence,
teamwork, sportsmanship, and a sense of accomplishment through athletic
competition.
The
Villa Booster Club accepts all Villa students who wish to play on a team. Because this can result in large teams, playing time for each player may be limited depending on the judgment of the coach and whether the game is a league game or a tournament game. Even with these considerations, we recommend that each child be given as much playing time as possible.
At the instructional level (grades 3 and 4), winning is not the primary goal: emphasis is placed on basics, learning the rules of the game and having fun.
At the intermediate level (grades 5 and 6), where more intense drill in the basics and teamwork is stressed, winning becomes a realistic goal, along with learning the principles of good sportsmanship.
With the 7th and 8th grade team, advanced skills and teamwork contribute to a more competitive level of basketball, partly because it is important for this age group to understand the reward for individual and team effort and, also, to serve as sound preparation for high school level sports.
In order to insure success in operation, several procedures have been implemented:
First, there will be a mandatory group meeting for all parents, coaches, and players shortly after sign-up or parents must arrange to meet separately with the coach. At this meeting, the coaches will explain the Villa's philosophy and how playing time for each player will be determined by his or her attitude, hustle and skills.
If any issue concerning behavior or team participation occurs, a meeting between the coach and parent should be arranged by the concerned parties. Open and frequent communication between parents and coaches can't be stressed enough. Cooperation between coaches and parents makes a huge difference in the success of the sports program for all the children.
Second, because we are a very small school and we operate on a limited budget, all our activities must be self-supporting, not only in terms of dollars, but also in terms of volunteer help. In order for a child to participate in the basketball or cheerleading program, his or her parent(s) must help out either in the canteen or in the gym for a limited number of hours across the season. Time slots for these activities will be available at numerous times during each week, and scheduling will be coordinated shortly after sign-up in the Fall. Parents who cannot schedule volunteer time should arrange some other alternative support activity with the coach.
Third, it is anticipated that children playing on basketball teams or on a cheerleading squad will do service activities for one of the other teams some time during the season. For example, collect admission fees for one of the Villa Invitational games held on Saturdays in Rosary Hall.
These procedures will be outlined on the registration slips which each player must return to the school signed by a parent or guardian. By signing the registration slip, a parent or guardian agrees to abide by the Villa philosophy and Booster Club Operational Procedures.
