School Board Minutes
June 9, 2007
REVISED

The school board met in the teachers’ room of Villa Augustina School. The meeting began at 8:35 a.m. and ended at noon. Dave Korf led the group in prayer.

Board members present: Sr. Michelle Authier, Sr. Pauline Ayotte, Gerry Bergeron, Sr. Jeannine Cote, recorder, Jack Daniels, Sr. Diane Dube, Dave Korf, Eric Laurendeau, Sr. Shirley Leveille, Tim Mark, Sr. Margaret Perron, Rev. John Quinn, Tom Szopa and Philip Valley.

Absent: Denise Jobe and Allison Niedbala.

Faculty members and parents were also in attendance.

Mary Roberge was introduced as the incoming President for the Home and School. Tracy Ouellette, co-chair of the Golf Tournament, was introduced as the new parent representative on the board.

The minutes for the May 5 meeting were read and accepted with minor corrections. Gerry Bergeron made a motion to accept the minutes and Tom Szopa seconded the motion.

INFORMATION ITEMS

Sr. Margaret Perron gave the suggested By-laws proposal change that has met the approval from the RJMs:

Art II, Section 2e currently reads:
Not less than one-third of the voting members shall be Religious of Jesus and Mary, one of whom shall be appointed by the Provincial Government.

After a brief discussion, the change was amended to read:

Amend Art. II, Section 2e to read:
Not less than one-third of the voting members shall be Religious of Jesus and Mary or individuals appointed by the Provincial Government.

Rev. John Quinn made the motion that this change be accepted. Sr. Michelle seconded the motion. Since a two week time allotment is needed for Board members to vote on a proposed change to the by-laws, the board members will be voting electronically in two weeks.

Dave reported that Randy Benthien continues his interviews on the feasibility study. He had completed 32 interviews and expects to have a report for the Board by the end of June.

Dave Korf received a response from Sr. Janet Stolba in reply to the Board’s March 17 request for an interest-bearing loan from the Religious of Jesus and Mary. After discussion and upon the advice of the RJM financial and legal advisors, the Council and she are unable to grant the request for such a loan.

REPORTS

PRINCIPAL

Jack Daniels reported on the following:
- The Religious of Jesus and Mary awarded the school a $15,000 grant to be applied to the transition process. This amount was gratefully received.
- Jeff Jenkins has been coming for band twice a week this past year and the results have been very positive.
- Jack informed the members of the Board of the proposed changes for the Grade 5 curriculum. Study Skills will be part of next year’s program and the teachers, parents and students are enthusiastic about the plan. This program is also projected to impact the junior high program in a very positive manner.
- The Golf Tournament will be held at Crotched Mountain on September 22. One of the great incentives will be the Master’s Raffle.

Paul Swinford, development director, reported on the many activities that were happening at Rosary Hall to prepare for the evening’s benefit in honor of the Religious of Jesus and Mary’s 125 years of service in the state of New Hampshire.

He also shared his plans to advertise the school in the Goffstown News, Bedford Bulletin, and Parenting NH during the summer.

(See the Development Office Report to School Board)

EDUCATION

Phil Valley met with his committee members and reported on the topics that were covered. (See Educational Policy Meeting of May 29, 2007)

Phil pointed out that parents have observed that very little bullying takes place at the Villa, a good selling point as bullying seems to be a problem in many other schools. He also elaborated on some recent research that he has read on the importance of asking the right questions, noting: instead of the usual: What did you learn today? parents should consider asking: What questions did you ask today?

FINANCE

Tom Szopa presented a realistic report on the Villa School’s finances for the 2007-2008 school year. It is imperative that the school have 285 students to cover the projected expenses. (See Finance Committee Report)

PLANT

Eric Laurendeau presented the work that had been done in his committee. He gave cost options and also timelines to follow for the stair replacement. After much deliberation, the committee members opted to promote Option 1 in this project, recognizing, however, that its fate depends on the school’s ability to raise funds and are eager to receive the report that Randy Benthien will present at the end of June.

Eric outlined the work that is planned this summer emphasizing the renovations to be done in the school kitchen to accommodate the needed requirements for state funding for a school lunch and breakfast program. The Abbey Group (from Vermont) will be managing the cafeteria in the fall.

ALUMNI

Sr. Diane reported on some of the activities of the alumnae: the publishing of another Villa Visions while they continue enlarging their database. Mrs. Nancy Garneau will be joining the alumni group; it is hoped that her presence and input will be instrumental in helping to contact our elementary graduates and encourage their return for upcoming events.

The next meeting will be June 20 during which time they will discuss the next Villa Visions and the next class reunion that will be held in September.

NOMINATING

The parents have nominated the parent rep and the RJMs will be appointing a representative for the school board for next year.

At the end Dave Korf thanked everyone for his or her time and dedication. He also asked that the chairpersons thank committee members. Without volunteers, Dave remarked, the school simply would not exist.

Dave Korf also informed the board members that a new set of deliverables would be sent by July 21 to the Religious of Jesus and Mary Provincial, Sr. Janet, and her council.

The business meeting of this board ended with the motion made by Gerry Bergeron and seconded by Sr. Pauline. This was followed by a thank you luncheon for all the members, and especially for those leaving office – Sr. Michelle Authier, Sr. Shirley Ann Leveille, and Tim Mark.

Submitted by,

Sr. Jeannine Cote, RJM
Recorder
